Is Your Pakistani Degree Valid in Germany? (anabin, ZAB, Recognition)
2 min read · 3 steps · Updated 1 October 2026
Before you apply for a German work visa, check if your degree is recognised. How to use anabin (H+ universities), when you need a ZAB Statement of Comparability (€208, up to 3 months), HEC attestation, regulated jobs like doctors and nurses, and what to do if your degree is only partly recognised.

Your degree took four years. But in Germany, it might count for nothing, unless you check one thing first.
Today: how to find out if your Pakistani degree is recognised in Germany, step by step, and what to do if it isn't.
First, why does it matter?
For most work visas, like the EU Blue Card or the skilled worker visa, Germany wants proof that your degree is comparable to a German one. Without it, the visa can be refused, even if you already have a job offer.
Step by step

The anabin database
Anabin is a free official database. Search for your university first. If it's rated H plus, it's generally recognised as a university in Germany. Then check your degree. If your exact degree is listed as equivalent, many embassies will accept it with your normal documents.
Many Pakistani universities are rated H plus. But not all of them, and not every degree program. So check your own university and your own degree, not your friend's.

If your degree isn't listed: the Statement of Comparability
This is a document from the ZAB, Germany's central office for foreign education. It says what your degree is worth in German terms. You apply online, upload your degree, transcripts and school certificates, and pay a fee of 208 euros. If your documents are complete, it takes up to three months.
And remember, in Pakistan you'll usually need your degree attested by the Higher Education Commission first, for both the embassy and your applications.

Check if your job is regulated
This is where many people get stuck. For regulated professions like doctors, nurses, pharmacists and teachers, the Statement of Comparability isn't enough. You need full recognition from the responsible authority in the German state where you'll work. Doctors, for example, need a licence called the Approbation, and usually a medical German exam.
Good to know
For non-regulated jobs, like most IT, business or marketing roles, you don't need a licence. The anabin entry or the ZAB statement is usually enough.
What if your qualification is only partly recognised?
You still have options. Germany has a special visa to come and complete the missing parts, through a course or practical training. And since 2024, there's a recognition partnership, where you come to work for an employer while you finish recognition, if you have some German and a job contract.
A free tool can save you weeks. On the official website, Recognition in Germany, the Recognition Finder tells you exactly which authority handles your profession and where you plan to live.
In short: Check anabin, get the ZAB statement if you need it, and find out if your job is regulated. Do it before you apply for jobs, not after.
