50,700 euros. That's the salary you need in 2026 for Germany's EU Blue Card. But for many jobs, it's lower. And it can lead to permanent residence in under two years.
The EU Blue Card is Germany's main work permit for university graduates. It's fast, it's flexible, and it's the route many Pakistani engineers, doctors and IT specialists take.
So who can get it?
You need three things. A university degree that's recognised in Germany. A job offer in Germany that matches your qualification. And a salary above the threshold.
In 2026, the standard threshold is 50,700 euros a year, gross. That's about 4,225 euros a month.
But there's a lower threshold: 45,934 euros. It applies to shortage occupations like IT, engineering, medicine, nursing and teaching. And to recent graduates who finished their degree in the last three years.
And IT specialists don't even need a degree. With at least three years of relevant experience in the last seven years, you can qualify too.
So how do you check your degree? Look it up in the anabin database. If your university and degree are listed as H plus, you're usually fine. If not, you can apply for a Statement of Comparability from Germany's Central Office for Foreign Education.
Then comes the best part.
Your family can come with you. Your spouse doesn't need to prove German skills first, and they're allowed to work in Germany.
And permanent residence comes fast. After 27 months with a Blue Card, you can apply. With B1 German, it's just 21 months.
You can also change jobs. After the first year, you usually just need to tell the immigration office. And with the card, you can move to another EU country more easily later.
How much is 50,700 euros really? After tax and social contributions, a single person keeps roughly 2,700 euros a month, depending on the city and tax class.
The hard part is the job offer. German employers want to see a clear CV, proof of your degree, and often some German, even in English speaking jobs.
So if you don't have an offer yet, two routes help. The Opportunity Card to search on the ground, or applying online and interviewing remotely.
In short: The Blue Card is Germany's fast lane for graduates. A degree, a matching job, and the right salary, and in under two years you could be a permanent resident.
