Mac Bluetooth not working? 7 fixes to try

2 min read · 7 steps · Updated 2 October 2026

Short answer

Turn Bluetooth off and on in Control Centre, restart the Mac, and make sure the accessory is charged and in pairing mode. If it still fails, open System Settings, Bluetooth, click the i next to the device, choose Forget This Device and pair it again.

A mouse, keyboard or headphones that will not connect usually need a fresh pairing, or are connected to another device nearby.

Step by step

  1. Turn Bluetooth off and on

Click Control Centre in the menu bar, click Bluetooth and use the switch. With a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard only, use a wired one or the trackpad for this step.

  2. Check the accessory

Charge it or change its batteries, switch it off and on, and put it in pairing mode.

  3. Disconnect it from other devices

Headphones often connect to your phone first. Switch Bluetooth off on the phone for a moment.

  4. Restart the Mac

Click the Apple menu and choose Restart.

  5. Forget the device and pair again

Open System Settings, Bluetooth. Click the i next to the device, choose Forget This Device, then connect it again from Nearby Devices.

  6. Remove interference

USB 3 hubs and drives right next to the Mac, and crowded 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, can disturb Bluetooth. Move the hub away or use a longer cable, and keep the accessory within a few metres.

  7. Update macOS

Open System Settings, General, Software Update.

Good to know

AirPods connect through your Apple Account. If they fail, put them in the case, close the lid for 15 seconds and try again.

If the Bluetooth menu says "Bluetooth: Not Available", restart. If it stays that way, the Mac needs service.
