iPhone camera blurry? 7 fixes to try

2 min read · 7 steps · Updated 2 October 2026

Short answer

Wipe the lens with a soft cloth, remove the case, and tap the screen where you want sharp focus. If close-up photos are still blurred, move back a little or turn off macro mode with the flower button, close and reopen the Camera app, and restart the phone.

Blurry photos come from a dirty lens far more often than from a broken camera. The second most common cause is the phone focusing on the wrong thing or switching lenses by itself when you get close.

Step by step

  1. Clean the lens

Fingerprints leave a film that makes lights streak and everything look soft. Wipe the camera glass with a clean microfibre cloth or a soft cotton T-shirt. Clean the front camera as well.

  2. Take off the case and any lens protector

Cases can creep over the edge of the lens, and stick-on lens protectors add glare. Magnetic cases and mounts can also disturb the stabilisation.

  3. Tap to focus

Tap the screen on your subject and wait for the yellow square. Touch and hold to lock focus and exposure if the phone keeps refocusing.

  4. Step back, or control macro mode

Very close to a subject, Pro models switch to the ultra-wide lens for macro shots, which can look grainy. Move back a little, or open Settings, Camera and switch on Macro Control so a flower icon lets you turn it off.

  5. Hold steady in low light

In dim light the camera needs longer and shows a Night mode timer. Keep still until it finishes, rest your elbows on something, or use a tripod.

  6. Restart the Camera app and the phone

Swipe the Camera app away in the app switcher and open it again. If the picture stays black or blurred, restart the iPhone.

  7. Test each lens

Tap 0.5, 1x and the telephoto number in turn. If only one lens is blurred or makes a buzzing sound, that camera is faulty and needs repair.

Good to know

Do not clean the lens with window cleaner, alcohol or anything abrasive.

If the main camera vibrates or cannot hold focus, the stabilisation may be damaged. Apple warns that strong vibration, for example from a motorbike mount, can cause this.

Condensation inside the lens after a cold-to-warm change usually clears by itself within an hour.

In short: Clean the lens, remove the case, tap to focus, step back from close subjects, restart.
