Open the Phone app, go to your call history, touch and hold the number, and tap Block/report spam. Confirm with Block. The number can no longer call or text you.
Blocking stops calls and text messages from a number. The caller is not told. They hear ringing or go straight to voicemail, depending on your network.
Menu names below are from Google Pixel phones on a recent Android version. Samsung, Xiaomi and other brands rename some of them, so the Samsung name is given where it differs. The pictures are simplified diagrams of the screen, not screenshots.
Step by step
Open the Phone app and find the call
Your call history is on the Home tab in the current Google Phone app, and on the Recents tab in older versions and on Samsung.
Touch and hold the number
A menu opens. On Samsung, tap the number, then the i icon.
Tap Block/report spam
Untick "Report call as spam" if this is a person you know and not a spam caller. Then tap Block. On Samsung, tap Block at the bottom of the contact page.
Block from a text message
In Google Messages, touch and hold the conversation, tap the three dots and choose Block.
Good to know
To see or undo blocks, open the Phone app, tap the three dots, Settings, Blocked numbers. Tap the X next to a number to unblock it.
On the same page you can block all calls from unknown or hidden numbers.
Caller ID and spam protection, under Phone settings, warns you about suspected spam calls before you answer.
Blocking here does not block the person in WhatsApp or other apps.
In short: Phone app, call history, hold the number, Block/report spam, Block.
