How to scan a QR code with an iPhone
2 min read · 5 steps · Updated 2 October 2026
Open the Camera app, point it at the QR code and tap the yellow link that appears. No extra app is needed.
QR codes hold a web address, a Wi-Fi password, a ticket or a payment link. Every iPhone reads them with the built-in camera.
Step by step
Open the Camera app
Use the normal Photo mode with the rear camera.
Hold the phone so the code is inside the frame
Keep it steady for a second. A yellow frame appears around the code with a label showing the website name.
Read the address before you tap
The label shows where the code leads. If the name looks odd or does not match what you expected, do not open it.
Tap the yellow label
The link opens in Safari, or the matching app opens for tickets, Wi-Fi and payments.
Use the Code Scanner in poor light
Open Control Centre, add the Scan Code control if needed and tap it. This scanner switches the torch on with a tap.
Good to know
If nothing happens, open Settings, Camera and check that Scan QR Codes is switched on.
To scan a code that is in a photo or screenshot, open the picture in Photos, touch and hold the code and choose Open in Safari.
Be careful with QR codes on stickers in public places, such as parking meters. Criminals paste fake codes over real ones. Type the address yourself for payments.
In short: Camera app, point at the code, tap the yellow label.
