Android phone not charging? 8 fixes to try in order

2 min read · 8 steps · Updated 2 October 2026

Short answer

Try a different cable and wall charger, clean the USB-C port gently with a wooden toothpick, and restart the phone. If you see a moisture warning, let the port dry for a few hours. Leave an empty phone connected for 30 minutes before judging.

Charging faults are usually caused by the cable, the charger or dirt in the port, not by the phone itself. Start at the top of this list; the first three fixes solve most cases.

Step by step

  1. Swap the cable

USB-C cables wear out at the plug. Try another cable, ideally the one that came with the phone or one from a known brand.

  2. Swap the charger and the socket

Use a wall charger, not a laptop or car port, and test a different wall socket. Fast charging needs a charger that supports your phone's standard.

  3. Clean the port

Switch the phone off and look into the port with a light. Lift out fluff with a wooden or plastic toothpick. Do not use metal pins, which can bend the contacts.

  4. Restart the phone

Hold the power button, or power and volume up, and tap Restart. A frozen system process can stop charging from starting.

  5. Wait if the battery was empty

A fully drained phone may show nothing for ten minutes or more. Leave it connected for half an hour.

  6. Deal with a moisture warning

A water-drop icon means the port is wet or dirty. Unplug, shake out any water gently, and leave the phone in a dry, airy place for a few hours. Wireless charging is safe to use in the meantime.

  7. Check charging limits

Many phones stop at 80% or pause overnight on purpose. On Pixel: Settings, Battery, Charging optimisation. On Samsung: Settings, Battery, Battery protection.

  8. Try safe mode

Open the power menu, then touch and hold Power off and confirm Safe mode. If the phone charges normally there, an app you installed is interfering. Restart to leave safe mode and remove recent apps.

Good to know

If the cable only works when held at an angle, the port is worn and needs replacing. That is a routine repair.

A phone that gets hot while charging slows or stops charging to protect the battery. Take off the case and keep it out of the sun.

Check how much charge the battery still holds, if your phone shows it, under Settings, Battery, Battery health.

In short: New cable and charger, clean the port, restart, dry the port if warned, check the 80% limit.
